Ant FAQs — Central Coast NSW

Updated: 6 days ago
Ants are a year-round nuisance for Central Coast households, especially after rain. Dylan, the owner-operator of Smash Pest Control, explains how to deal with them properly.
Why do I have ants in my kitchen?
Ants follow scent trails to food, water and sweet spills. Once one scout finds a feed, the whole colony follows. Sealing food, wiping benches and fixing leaks help, but the nest outside still needs treating to stop them coming back.
How do I get rid of ants permanently?
Find and treat the nest, not just the ants you can see. Baits carried back to the colony work well, and a perimeter treatment keeps new ants out. Dylan identifies the species first, since each ant needs a slightly different approach.
Are ants in the house a sign of something worse?
Usually they are just foraging, but white ants (termites, which are not true ants) signal a serious problem. If you see flying ants or mud tubes, book a termite inspection straight away. See white ants vs termites for how to tell them apart.
Why do ants come inside after rain?
Heavy rain floods nests, so ants move indoors looking for dry shelter. This is very common on the Central Coast after a wet spell. A barrier treatment around the house helps keep them out during and after storms.
Are baits or sprays better for ants?
It depends on the species. Baits suit trailing ants because workers carry the poison back to the nest. Sprays suit perimeter protection. Dylan often uses a combination, chosen after identifying exactly which ants you have.
