Looking for an exterminator on the Central Coast? What a licensed pest controller actually does

An exterminator is simply a pest controller by another name. In NSW the work is done by licensed pest management technicians, and a good one inspects first, identifies exactly what you have, treats the cause rather than just the visible pests, and tells you plainly what to expect afterwards. On the Central Coast, Smash Pest Control handles ants, cockroaches, spiders, rodents, termites and more. General pest treatments start from $250.

Exterminator, pest controller or pest manager: is there a difference?

In everyday Australian use there is no difference. People search for an exterminator, a bug man or a pest controller, and they all mean someone who gets rid of the pests in or around their home or business. The industry itself prefers the term pest management technician because the job is more than spraying: it is identifying the pest, finding what is feeding it, choosing the right treatment and preventing a repeat.

What does matter is the licence. In NSW, applying pesticides for a fee needs a pesticide licence, and termite work needs a specific termite endorsement. Smash Pest Control holds NSW Pesticide Licence PMT-TP 5203560 and carries $20M public liability insurance, and you are entitled to ask any operator to show you theirs.

What an exterminator actually does on the day

  1. Talk and look. Dylan asks what you have seen, where and when, then inspects the likely areas: kitchen, bathrooms, laundry, roof void, subfloor, garage and the outside of the house.

  2. Identify the pest. A German cockroach and a brown-banded cockroach need different treatment, and so do a mouse and a rat. Getting the ID right is half the job.

  3. Explain the plan. You hear what will be treated, which products are used, how long to stay out and what to do before and after. Tell him about kids, pets and fish tanks.

  4. Treat. Typically a barrier treatment around the outside of the house, eaves, entry points and garden edges, plus targeted gel, dust or spot treatment inside where the pest is actually living.

  5. Advise. Moisture, food storage, gaps, overhanging branches and stacked boxes all feed pests. You get practical fixes so the problem does not simply return.

Which pests we treat, and what they cost to start

Prices below are starting points. The final figure depends on the size of the property, how bad the problem is and the access. Dylan confirms before any work begins.

What we do not treat

Honesty saves everyone time. We are a pest and termite business. We do not remove possums, snakes or other wildlife, and we do not handle building work. If your call is something we do not do, Dylan will say so rather than take a booking he cannot do well.

How to tell a good exterminator from a bad one

  • They hold a current NSW pesticide licence and will show you the number.

  • They inspect before they quote, rather than reading you a price over the phone for a problem they have not seen.

  • They explain the product, the re-entry time and the safety precautions.

  • They give you the terms in writing and are straight about what a treatment will and will not do.

  • The person who quotes is the person who does the work.

For a longer list, see our guide to general pest control FAQs and the seasonal pest calendar, which shows what is active when. If it is mice or rats in the roof, start with the rodent FAQs.

Exterminator FAQs

Is an exterminator the same as a pest controller?

Yes. Exterminator is the everyday word, but in NSW the work is done by licensed pest management technicians.

How much does an exterminator cost on the Central Coast?

General pest treatments start from $250, ant control from $200 and rodent control from $60. The final price depends on the property and the pest.

Is pest treatment safe for kids and pets?

Treatments follow the product label, and Dylan explains re-entry times and precautions before work starts. Tell him about children, pets and fish tanks.

How quickly can an exterminator come out?

We take calls 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Bookings depend on current scheduling, so call 0447 088 762 for the next available time.

Do I need to be home?

It helps on the first visit so Dylan can see the problem areas, but access can often be arranged for exteriors, tenanted and commercial properties.

Will one treatment fix it?

For many common pests, yes. German cockroaches, rodents and ants can need a follow-up, and Dylan tells you that up front.
