Rodent FAQs — Central Coast NSW

Updated: 6 days ago
Rats and mice breed quickly, so acting early matters for Central Coast homes. Dylan, the owner-operator of Smash Pest Control, answers the common rodent questions below.
How do I know if I have rats or mice in my house?
Common signs are droppings, scratching in walls or roof voids at night, gnaw marks, greasy rub marks along walls and a musty smell. Pets may also act strangely near hiding spots. Early action matters because rodents breed quickly.
How do I get rid of rats in the roof?
A licensed technician finds the entry points, sets traps or baits safely, and seals gaps so rats cannot return. Dylan inspects the roof void and surrounds of your Central Coast property, then treats and proofs the home himself.
Are rat baits safe around pets and kids?
Baits are placed in tamper-resistant stations in areas children and pets cannot reach. Never use loose baits at home, as other animals can be poisoned by eating a dead rodent. Dylan chooses the safest method for your situation.
What attracts rats and mice to my home?
Easy food, water and shelter. Pet food left out, unsealed bins, fruit trees, overgrown gardens and gaps around pipes or roof edges all attract them. Fixing these makes your property much less appealing to rodents.
Can mice get in through tiny gaps?
Yes. A mouse can squeeze through a gap about the size of a 10 cent coin, and rats through a gap around 2 cm. Sealing entry points with steel wool or metal mesh is a vital part of long-term control.
